About Culver City
There are many things to love about Culver City, I have lived here since 1995, and I want to share some of those with you and in process, if you are not already a fan, convert you into one.
Culver City is rapidly changing from the “little engine that could” to the
little engine that has! Founded in 1917 by a visionary real estate investor called Harry Culver, the city grew up around the many movie studios that were encouraged to come here by Mr. Culver. He figured if these large companies based themselves here, then jobs for the local population would follow. He was right and Culver City grew quite rapidly over the next few decades.
The residential neighborhoods were all built around a local park, such as Veterans’ Park and Lindberg Park, (for details on all of the great parks click here) and the streets are all tree lined. This gives Culver City a very “Mayberry” feel.
From the 1960’s on though, it stagnated for a few decades until the early nineties when the Culver City Redevelopment Agency and council members with a desire to turn the city into a thriving, not just surviving, destination on the west side of Los Angeles.
I love the family oriented nature of the residents, you really do get to know you neighbors. There are lots of street parties going on in the summer, a huge festival called Fiesta La Ballona held on the last weekend of August every year, a Cruisin’ back to the 50’s Car Show in May and so much more.
I love that the schools are under the control of our local School Board, this gives parents a real say in how our schools are run both now and how their development in the future. In recent years funding from the state has been drastically cut, this has required a tremendous effort on behalf of the school board and the parents to make the schools run on far less money and yet maintain the quality of education that we have come to accept over the last 10 years.
I love that several great restaurants, theaters and stores are all located with a couple of miles of my house; it is about a 10 minute walk. It’s a great night out and all the revenue that is generated stays in Culver City.
I love that our police and fire departments are small and responsive and are directly responsible to the city manager and the council members.
I love the Fourth of July fireworks display, launched from the High School football field, the many street parties and general good time had by all.
I love that we are located 10 minutes from the beach, 15 minutes from LAX and 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles.
Are you a fan yet?
